The cantilever bridge known as the Outerbridge Crossing spans the Arthur Kill between Staten Island, N.Y., and Perth Amboy, N.J. Although many believe that the appellation pays homage to its location as the most remote and outlying crossing in New York State, the bridge was actually named for Eugenius Outerbridge, the first chairman of the Port of New York Authority.
The Outerbridge Crossing shared its grand opening on June 29, 1928, with that of the Goethals Bridge, to which it is similar in design. In spite of the convenience they offered travelers, however, neither of the two bridges saw much action until the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1974.
Approximately 90,000 vehicles now traverse the Outerbridge Crossing on a daily basis, with E-ZPass customers paying a lower toll during off-peak hours. The high volume of traffic sustained by this toll bridge has necessitated numerous repairs over the years.Google+
